4 Artists You Should Know: Diversity in Design
Celebrate the work of these extraordinary artists. Each with their own unique background, they draw inspiration from their culture and surroundings to create phenomenal designs.
Our first artist is Febin Raj, an incredible talent currently living and working in Bangalore, India. Inspired by a love of nature and traditional art techniques, he creates exceptional digital illustrations of everyday landscapes.
I started my journey in graphic design. Since then, illustration is the main tool I use to express all my visuals.
I originally studied at the College of Fine Arts of Thrissur. At the time, I really liked watercolor techniques, so I made a bunch of landscapes in watercolor.
I really like nature, that’s my big inspiration in art. I’m just trying to create real nature and I think that makes people more happy.
I love work that uses a lot of textures and colors. One day, far in the future—if I can retire, I want to be a watercolor artist. Artists like Gerhard Van Wyk inspire me.
Next up is Joy Tien of New York. Joy is a 3D look development artist who creates stunning, realistic scenes for commercial and personal work. Check out her amazing pieces featuring delightful food, incredible character development, and fan art.
I’ve been living here in DC for 16 years, and throughout those years I’ve been able to meet so many different people that come from a wide range of backgrounds.
I come from a first generation family from El Salvador and their dream was to give my sisters and I the best education opportunities.
Growing up I’ve always been motivated to create as a form of expression and a way to communicate with others. I have now embodied their dream and I have always stayed true to myself and the goals I set to achieve.
I am now an experienced Marketing Graphic Designer with a history of working in the higher education industry, as well as a freelancer working with nonprofits and startups here in the DC community.
Personally, I use social media platforms to promote and share my work. Instagram is my favorite because I can reach a wide range of audiences from all over the world.
Our final artist in this feature is Madelyn Cruz, a graphic designer and illustrator based in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Beaming with brightness and personality, her work showcases her love of design and fierce characters.
My name’s Madelyn and I think I’m still a little girl with her head in the clouds. I’m an illustrator and graphic designer who is in love with her career.
Greek Muses as Cats
I’m inspired by nature and people—mostly kids. I recall the innocence and the true great amazement that I had as a child.
I believed—and I still do, in magic, and in the good you can find in the things that surround us. Everything seemed bigger and greater in my eyes as a child and I want to be able to hold onto that through my work.
Space Catto and Bounty Hunter
I look up to people who truly stick to their true self. I really admire Beatrix Potter as an illustrator. I love how she believed in herself and fought for her work.
For style I would say I love classical techniques such as watercolor or colored pencils, although I’m working on digital environments lately I try to keep the look and feel of paper techniques.
